Universal explanations for the riddles of nature. Greeks had trouble integrating the empirical approach with the abstract deductive theoretical element of physics they so greatly valued, despite some of their philosophers appreciating the usefulness of the empirical approach. This is perhaps the reason why Greek physics never really took off. However, it provided the foundation for the final physics blooming that finally took place in Western Europe during and immediately following the Renaissance. By examining both the Greeks' triumphs and the causes of their failings, we can learn a lot from them, just like the Renaissance philosophers did.
